Print is dying

The print media

The print is not dead just yet, but faces the feasible death on account of the less consumption of print during the overwhelming internet impact.

Ages ago, the print industry existed from forms of media like magazines and newspapers which was, of course diluted after the approach of the internet. The signs of its dissipation manifested in various ways and that consequently put journalism future at risk. When looking at the World Press, South Africa is at rank 31 but, there are threats on the position. That is due to the attack of journalists mostly of females both online and physical. For instance, the scandal that was circulating not long ago, where the Economic Freedom Fighters leader posted a journalist’s mobile phone number on Twitter which consequently made the violence and death threats.

There was also a target of journalists working on corruption, state of capture and mismanagement of state security agencies, by the stand and Private-Sector Spying. That information is granted by South African_DNR_FINAL. On the other hand, respected journalists were attacked and labelled as disgusting and unacceptable. This whole strong hostility was caused by the uncover of corruption that was made by those independent journalists through investigations. That include the revelation of government corruption, illegalities of regiments capitals and Steinhoff collapse.

As we know that during election investigative journalism plays a crucial role which brings a shining image of journalism among citizens. For an example, on 2019 elections, the corrupt misrule of Jacob Zuma was put to an end. News24 and Daily Maverick centers of investigative journalism took a very large and significant part in helping to discover the corrupt connection between Jacob Zuma and the Guptas.
After that event, the situation of the economy hasn’t been good. There were many refreshments at the large media centers. That happened on companies like Sunday Times and Business Day that shutdown newspaper tabloid called Sunday World. There were other retrenchments at Daily Dispatch, Business Day and Herald. Media24 closed after only 18 months of its existence followed by the Independent Afro Voice newspaper. Also, the SABC promised to retrench a couple of its permanent employees and freelancers.

Through all the scandalous and misleading information, the trust in the South African traditional news events remained heavy even though it continues to be under threats. It is erased by the various aforementioned and other reasons including the journalism that is doing its work carelessly, the practices of businesses that are unethical and the misinformation that escalates and affects the crucial national elections.

Newspapers like Sunday Times, the most trusted news brand, was forced many times to apologise for the inflexibility of journalists. There were also publications of false information and some of the journalist awards were taken back. But, through all those trials and tribulations Sunday Times still ranks 6 on the trusted news brand list. In the meantime, the Independent Media that is the largest of new media groups negotiated the intervention on its editorial policy by its owner. It is not able to pay back the money which is R1 billion of South Africa’s Public Investment Corporation.

The social media

South Africa first shifted news from newspapers to desktops and laptops. But, now it has become heavier on using social media and messaging around the world. The evidence is found when looking at the main getaway to news statistics. The 33% is of those who prefer to get news via Social media ahead of direct access and 28% that is of through a news app or a website.

With my smartphone, I have various platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, News24, GoogleNews and several others that disseminate the news and information. It makes me access to news update without any charges. It saves my time and the communication is deliberately good as it does not take much longer to access. It is small and convenient to carry it with me everywhere I go so I get notified of news while still heated. What I also like is that the news information is accompanied either by pictures that are usually of a good quality, videos, active links or audios. However, it can be accompanied by all of the aforementioned features which makes it much more entertaining and interesting.

“Magazines all over the world, including ourselves, have to adapt to a digital world. But it’s an exciting challenge to reinvent ourselves and to be able to explore new ways of extending the brand beyond print in a media environment that’s changing by the day,” Olivier Royant, editor-in-chief said at the Media24 Summit.

The sluggish dissipation of newspapers forces journalists to find themselves as part of the new routine of news production. These changes are affecting the newsroom operations and communication routine which affects the way they socialize on their work and professions. The the effects have caused them especially of traditional newspaper to be hesitant to adapt.

Basic cause of Kwasa’s murder

The trend on the 21st of August about Kwasa who got stabbed to death by her boyfriend after she dumped him brought an outcry to the country, which had left many with questions related to its basic cause.

The death of a 20-year-old girl, Asithandile Kwasa Zozo Lungalo who was a first-year student at Wits University, brought a shock wave to South Africans.

Many have been bringing up assumptions of the cause about her death. Pointedly, Thabo X from Twitter brought assumption that it is Kwasa’s fault that she got stabbed, writing on Tunzi Zozibini’s #JusticeForKwasa post. He added that he believes she provoked her 22-year-old boyfriend, Viwe Rulumeni, or cheated on him and lied about it.

But, apparently it is not according to the screenshots that went viral on social media where she was telling her friend, Yonela Zitsheka, about her situation. she stated out that a lot had happened to her relationship. She was abused because her boyfriend was very jealousy. This one night when she decided to leave him, Viwe took a knife and threatened to kill himself. He immediately went outside the room but she did not pay much attention to him as it was not the first time saying that.

according to Facebook conversation between Kwasa and Yonela, Viwe came back and grabbed Kwasa’s phone and went outside to call his mother. She followed him after few minutes to demand her phone back. Out of spurn she told him if he wants to kill himself he must die alone and not with her phone. That was when Viwe got fumed and allegedly took her to an isolated dark place, far from the room. He said he will kill her as well because she promised to be with him forever. She tried to convince him not to and told him she was feeling cold from where they were standing to disrupt the argument. Viwe agreed and turned on the light. Luckily, Anelisa saw the occurrence and called the police which was the only way of rescuing her.

After that occurrence Viwe disappeared and nobody knew where he was including his family. They kept asking Kwasa since she reported him of his wrongdoings and was the person he was last seen with. His family convinced Kwasa to get back with him even if she was pretending for the sake of her own safety after he came back. And, because of his unstable health condition. She indeed took him back but things got worse. She was accused of cheating several times but yet stayed. He did that persistently to a point where Kwasa got fed up and dumped him for good. He gave her two slaps because of the disagreements they had, but that did not change her made-up decision. After a quite while he called saying he wanted all his money back. By virtue of prioritizing her safety and avoiding drama Kwasa paid it all back. After he saw she was not entertaining his drama he then claimed to repay it.

He had the keys to her house and took his lunchbox, and pretended he knows nothing about it. That caused another drama which later pan out he was seeking for her attention. This happened a week before he got into the house and took her card and withdrew her money. “On the 4th of Aug he came into my room, took my card and withdrew R500, a whole R500!” Kwasa said. “And yesterday around 11pm he tried to break into the room but luckily, I was inside and have put the key in the keyhole,” she added. She ran to stay in the village because of the severe threats she got from him.

She later emailed Wits University pleading for the invite but sadly was ignored.

She also texted Amahle Mbopha who is a Nelson Mandela University student, asking for an advices hence he is a well known motivational speaker and from the same hood. “She told me her story I listened. I feel so useless you know these cops are fucked up. A kid I’m not even a friend with just because I am opened to people she told me her story,” he said. He also mentioned that it was on the 8th of August when she poured out her issue to him. And, now every time he passes her home, he gets reminded of his last conversation he had with her.

Right after this whole scandal of Kwasa escolling, Viwe tracked her down and found her. On Monday, he arrived carrying a huge knife and demanded phones of those she was with, which Sunday Times claims it was her 10-year-old sister and her 20-year-old cousin. He wanted to ensure they make no mistake of contacting with anyone. When it was Kwasa’s turn to give it away she refused and fought for it. He took out a bottle of poison and forced it to her mouth and she bitterly fought back. He detected he is getting defeated and that is when he tied her mouth with a sticky tape. He forced her to wear a mask and stabbed her narrow wounds three times.

Beyond that she tried to fight until they landed outside. Two men saw this incident and tried to stop him. He threatened them with a knife. They managed to chase him away when they took wooden sticks to attack him back. Kwasa was urgently taken to the hospital and by the time she arrived she had taken her last breath.

By Sifembela Andisiwe

Instagram@lornamaseko

Lorna Maseko, 39, known during her marriage as Lorna Maseko-Lukhele is a South African ballet dancer, choreographer, MC, television presenter best known as a presenter on the SABC3 lifestyle magazine programmed Top Billing as well as entrepreneur.

Credited as the first professional ballet dancer of color in South Africa, Maseko grew up in Alexandra township, Johannesburg. She at the age of nine started the ballet dancing with Martin Schonberg. She usually woke up every morning and took bath in a tin basin like everyone else that lived in the area. That kind of life had made her grateful for the experience because it kept her motivated and authentic. She practiced ballet for quite a long time as it was her only career at the time. She trained in contemporary dance, she competed in Europe at the Prix du Lausanne competition, danced in Austria, qualified as a Cecchetti ballet teacher, and had a diverse repertoire in Schonberg’s Ballet Theatre Afrikan.

https://www.tvsa.co.za/actors/viewactor.aspx?actorid=15949

In 2007 the petite performer became the first African, South African female dancer to be cast in the virtuoso ballerina role of Kitri in Don Quixote. In this SA Ballet Theatre production, at the State Theatre in Pretoria, she was partnered by Andile Ndlovu, who now dances with the Washington Ballet. She then left ballet to pursue a television career, joining the SABC as a presenter and a producer on a show called Afro Showbiz News for SABC Africa. While working there she entered the first ever Top Billing Presenter Search and made it to the Top 10.

Being a finalist in the Top Billing talent search had activated her appetite for television. On SABC Africa Maseko presented Afro Showbiz News and produced the Weekender on SABC News International till the end of July, when she left. A programme with a business focus was her latest prospect. She also co-hosted and produced a live current affairs, magazine breakfast show, The Weekender on SABC News International.

She left her presenting gig in 2009 and started her own Events and Lifestyle Management company. After that, she landed a regular contract on the show. The entrepreneur started a Pilates company, but discovered she didn’t even like this form of body training. So, she founded Fabulous Production instead. This events company, specializing in dance entertainment and corporate gifting, goes full steam ahead in 2010, before being asked by Top Billing to film a segment for the 2010 World Cup. Anchoring her entrepreneurial spirit was her second year BComm business and media studies through Unisa. Chatting during a rehearsal break at the University of Johannesburg studios, Maseko seemed ambivalent about the ballet world she was back in.

After several television and event appearances in the ensuing years, she was named as a judge on the SABC1 reality competition show So You Think You Can Dance, in 2013. In 2014 she was a contestant on the e.tv game show I Love South Africa and the featured guest in a Season 2 episode of the SABC1 music talk show Zaziwa.

Lorna Maseko and Christina Avraamides @ Bread Basket restaurant.

She managed to keep audience’s eyes glued on Top Billing show while she was a presenter only to find out she was also passionate and enthusiastic about cooking. In 2015, she became one of the top finalists of celebrity MasterChef South Africa and that is when her love for food was revealed. Since then she intensified her talent as a celebrity chef and wanted to explore the culinary arts and grow her love of cooking. Since her appearance in Celebrity Masterchef SA, Maseko decided that she wanted to go to cooking school. After she completed the year-long course, she aimed to grow her series of Cooking With Lorna and Friends events, and later she looked at possibly hosting cooking lessons along with a cooking show that was in the pipeline.

As she decided to open her own restaurant, she did not start from scratch as she joined the Bread Basket franchise and had become the owner. Her restaurant was situated in the Morningside shopping center, Johannesburg. The deli served a variety of freshly baked goods along with personalised customer experiences. Christina Avraamides who is the founder of ‘one-stop concept emporium for freshly baked good’ and her husband Adonis since 1982, has visited Lorna’s restaurant to congratulate her.

“I’m excited to be part of The Bread Basket franchise family as owner of the Morningside Shopping Centre deli” Said Lorna Maseko. She went on to say, “Expect the same great taste you know and love from The Bread Basket and exceptional service from myself and my staff every day.”https://www.yomzansi.com/2017/07/27/lorna-maseko-is-the-new-owner-of-the-bread-basket-in-morningside-sandton/

Unfortunately, Lorna owed R700 000 for the restaurant and had retired it to the Famous Brands. She in 2017 hosted her own cooking and lifestyle reality series, The Hostess  with Lorna Maseko, in which she creates bespoke culinary and experiential moments for ordinary South Africans, celebrities and captains of industry.

Her success of The Hostess show on SABC3 had led her to create the cookbook titled Celebrate With Lorna Maseko .  It takes you on a food journey when remembering the burger and chips she enjoyed when participating in a ballet competition, how she fell in love with Asian food on a trip to Hong Kong. It tells how she participated in MasterChef South Africa and found her passion, Chef Carlos Gayton role in her love for Mexican food, how travelling exposed her to so many food cultures. The overarching theme is her encouraging home cooks to recreate traditional South African dishes with a bit of imagination. Now you can also make these dishes made shown by celebrity chef, Lorna Maseko. https://city-press.news24.com/Trending/Reviews/lorna-maseko-gets-a-cookbook-20190921.

Album Review: Nasty C – ‘Strings and Bling’

By Sifembela Andiswe ll

22/10/2019

Strings and Bling album cover

It would be hard to argue that there has been a Hip-Hop artist in recent memory that has won over the hearts of South African and parts of the world at the rate and magnitude that Nasty C has done in 3 years.

Having carried himself from unclear relative to success, Nasty’s story is well chronicled through his music and dude’s rap-heavy style has been a major part of his broad appeal amongst listeners and peers alike. Nasty c’s numerous winning of awards and reaching millions of streams as well as views, is safe to say that he avoided a far too common unexperienced downfall. When looking at his previous album, Bad Hair, he seems to rap but not as good as other rappers in the industry. Also, in that album he intended to showcase his musicality more than raps. Now on Nasty C – Strings & Bling, it sounds like he managed to strike a balance between the gritty Price City raps and melodic flows and wavy delivers from Bad Hair Extensions.

Nasty C achieves success with his ‘Strings and Bling’ album

Either way, here we are – String and Bling that has been released on the 16th of July 2018. Is the album worth it to be called a classic? To make it short, yes! Reasons are to be mentioned.

Several improvements are provided from its predecessor. The album dived into halves; the strings which consist of the more intimate and personal tracks on the record. As well as the bling; these are more hard-hitting trap bangers to put a move to your step or at least a bop to your neck.

Coming to the structure, the album is faultiness as it also brings the solid work that consist of the piece of artist in it. It is known as the best produced album on the year 2018 as the beat on it is insane. It is like the production was handled Be Nasty C and Gemini Major the way the African production had gone to an entirely different level sonically. Nasty C has always been a lyrical beast although, the String half side of the album had become more lyrical and powerful performances. Nasty had really focused on the raw and artistic detail as his lyricism on these Strings cuts, that it makes it feel like you can watch the whole album repeatedly as it never gets old. The reason the album is so special is the diversity and versatile displayed by Nasty on the album.

Nasty C – SMA (Vol. 1) ft. Rowlene – YouTube

On the album, he is featured by Rowlene on SMA where her vocals stand out fantastic as her vocals on the chorus. Another musician who is A$AP Ferg smashes the hit ‘King’ and a great performance brought out by Kaien Cruz on the song ‘Everything’ which is one of the best verses on the entire album. The insane lyrics are manifested on the tracks such as SMA with Rowlene, No respect, Everything and One Down.  He conveys the emotional charged but completely carry out verses on these songs which are bound to evokes feelings of the listeners.

Another fact on the album is the overall growth that Nasty has shown through his musical career. Tries of new sounds and flows do not necessary work for some musicians except they are extremely talented, and, on the album, Nasty had managed.

From being the most streamed artist on Spotify in the county, going platinum, numerous platinum singles, as well as awards and a sold-out tour, one can only look with excitement as to what’s next for the jiggy jigga.

It is developed after there was an observation that, there was a need for an alternative reliable means of transport. It also considers the way of reducing pollution and promote recycling by working on paperless system, electronic payment and e-receipt. It supports cash and card payments and most likely Intelli for NSFAS users as it is based on students. Although it does not want to exclude from benefiting from its service.

Derick: One of students who ranked a bike.

Currently it is for Nelson Mandela University students but hoping to provide bicycles for all students of South African as the company continues to grow. It is now situated at North campus. The rent for students is R20.00 for a half day, R25.00 for 24 hours and R200.00 for 5 days. For general public for 1 hour is it R80.00 and for 2 hours it is R150. If you want to extend it for 2 hours again, you only add R50.00. the business operates 24 hours in all seven days of the week.

It has no physical office online but an online platform. When a student wants to offer a bicycle, they book it using Quiqstart app or websites provided on Facebook page, Instagram, WhatsApp and Twitter. They call back to confirm if it is available or not. If it is then students go and take it at North campus and whenever they done using it bring it back to North. There is no obligate or fixed contract for rentals, it is flexible, meaning that students can cancel the offer anytime they want to.

“We do not really have suppliers and we do not contract with them. But with customers, they have a lot of power in a sense that flexibility is number one. You can take the bike anytime you like, and you can return it anytime you like. We don’t have contracts like obligatory contracts in a sense that it’s like a fixed agreement. You can cancel it anytime basically we got flexibility and flexibility is power.”

He had hired 3 members who are to help him make students rental experience amazing. These members are Gugu Mngomezulu, Phonsto Chuene and Ongezwa Konkwana who are also students. The reason he chose to make a team of students is the fact that they will make it easy for other students to put in motion the service.

There were workshops made, there are sales made also, there are free rentals made. This is done in the intention to attract and inform more students of the service.

In all the company progress, he had come across some challenge as any other businessman would. Some bikes get broken or need to be maintained. It requires his time and money to fix them. He does that by himself and sometimes get assistance when his team is free hence, they are students.

“First challenge is maintenance like the bikes take up a lot of time maintaining them I mean look at my hands right now. I have to fix these bikes almost every week and it’s costing a lot of money and time.”

The distinction about his business is that, it is all of its kind in South Africa specifically in Port Elizabeth, in a sense that it is located in the student environment. There is no other rental company in South Africa of bikes for students. Secondly, it has an online platform, everything is autonomous, it is the matter of someone going to where bikes are situated to pick it. And lastly, it is the most rental company, not just most rental company but even car rentals. It means that when they you want you to pay deposit and at Quiqstart they do not charge you a deposit.

“My vision with my team is to have bicycles everywhere, high schools, universities, on primary schools and even in shopping centers. We are aiming is to provide mobility solutions for students as it is the first of its own kind.”

AN INTERVIEW: CAREER PURSUING (PHARMACY)

Q&A, Here we go!

Had an amazing interview with Sineziwe Sakwe who is a student at Nelson Mandela University, doing her second degree in Pharmacy. She pours her heart on how passionate she is with her career . I found it significant and beneficial for those who are on the same journey as she is because they are going to get such encouragement and all that.

So Sineziwe you came all the way from Bizana, leaving all universities which are much close to your home and chose Nelson Mandela University. Can you tell me why?

Honestly, I chose NMU because its students are likely to get employed compared to other universities which is our aim at the end of the day. To this case of distance, I like long distance from home, it’s not a problem to me.

Okay, can you tell me what are you exactly doing at NMU and why?

I am doing my second year Degree in Pharmacy. The reason I chose it it’s because I’ve always had an interest in the medical profession from the treatment of various diseases to drugs and surgery. I narrowed my interests down to pharmacy, and it’s been my passion ever since. There was never another career choice for me. What’s more, I believe I have both the knowledge and personality to become a good pharmacist, bring value to the store

What did you do to prepare for the pharmacy school?

Honestly I did nothing, I just applied for it then got space to study.

Is there anyone else from your family who is a pharmacist, who you maybe got inspired from?

Not really, it’s my neighbor who is a pharmacist and yo! that person inspires me a lot. She has monies, her house is like a heaven on earth inside, not mentioning the car she is driving, she just drive me crazy. She is the reason why I push harder even when thing get tough because I want to Change my home situation too.

Now that you there, what module you like the most?

I enjoy the APPE we have to complete. The chance to work in a real job, with supervision, reinforce my belief that this is the career for me. It is excellent preparation for the job and probably the best time I am having in school.

It is so good to hear that, so are there any weaknesses you have and if yes, what strategies you implement to avoid such weakness?

Yes I do have one but my greatest weakness is that I am a shy and nervous person by nature. The result is that I have a difficult time speaking up in groups. At the same time, it’s not the best answer if the job requires public speaking skills. All I do to overcome that issue is to try to make a good communication with people around me.

A word of advice is that you need to workout on that weakness, really workout on it because it is one of the pharmacist skills required. For instance, you are going to work with people.

I know it can be awkward working by people and with them without being able to communicate with them properly. That would be disadvantageous even when looking for a job. I will improve on that, thank you!

You welcome, now where do you see yourself in the next five years?

All I wish is to get my Degree within two years coming, then get a job a pharmacist, earn money and change my home situation. That is all I’m praying for.

It’s a sure thing that there are still learners from high school and back who wants to be where you are one day and also want to be what you want to be. Can you brief them on what to do?

Biology. Because biology, microbiology, anatomy, physiology and biopharmacy are required in college or in pharmacy school, high school students should take as many biology courses as possible. Chemistry, Math, Business, Considerations. You will need to earn a Pharm.D. degree which can take six to eight years to complete after getting a high school diploma. This includes two to four years of college coursework and four years of professional study. After graduation, you will have to pass a written exam to get a license to practice.

Okay! Thank you so much for your time Sineziwe and goodluck with your degree.
